The Grinch takeover was a channel event where the Grinch from Illumination's 2018 animated movie The Grinch took over the SiIvaGunner channel.

Summary

The event was initially foreshadowed during the preceding Christmas 2018 event, where the banner was edited to include a transparent image of the Grinch and Max the Dog from then-upcoming 2018 The Grinch movie superimposed over the lighthouse. On December 6, in reference to the Grinch's "takeover" of the @Honda Twitter account, a promotional stunt for the movie, the Grinch completely took over the channel and the Twitter account, with the Grinch and Max completely replacing the lighthouse and the channel description changed to:

"The Grinch™ has taken over SiIvaGunner! See Illumination™’s THE GRINCH™ in theaters today!"

The Twitter account's name was changed to "The Grinch", the banner changed to an edit of the Grinch in a Minecraft Christmas landscape, the location was changed to "Mount Crumpit", and the account posted Tweets in-character as the Grinch.

Starting on December 19, after the release of "The Grand Finale - Super Smash Bros. UItimate", channel uploads were put on hiatus. Lore-wise, this hiatus went unexplained until Christmas Day, when a comic posted by the @GiIvaSunner Twitter account explained that the hiatus was caused by the Grinch, who grew envious over the Christmas spirit he saw on display and decided to cancel Christmas by putting a stop to rips for the year. Planted in the comic were details for upcoming events: the first mention of the upcoming King for Another Day Tournament, the date of the MAGFest 2019 SiIvaGunner panel and Q&A, and the names of several upcoming or planned rips.[1]

The real reason for the channel's hiatus is because of a series of copyright strikes caused by attempted counter-claims against various rips. These strikes would lead to the SiIvaGunner Termination on January 4, 2019.

At the beginning of January 2, 2019, the YouTube channel remained unchanged, but the Grinch seemingly released his grasp on the Twitter account, with the avatar, display name, header, description, and Tweets all changed to be in-character for Wood Man, and the location changed to Maryland, referring to their upcoming MAGFest appearance.

On February 28, the channel returned from termination with the Grinch's avatar, banner, and description still intact, but they were all quickly and unceremoniously changed to normal. The 2019 termination was not incorporated into the channel's lore as heavily as the 2016 termination, and the Grinch hasn't formally reappeared in the lore, so it is still unknown if he has any canonical connection to the termination. However, in the joke video "Unusual Circumstances - A SiIvaGunner Christmas Comeback Crisis Side Story", the Grinch appears and it is implied that he didn't directly cause the termination.

Rips uploaded

Most of the rips from this takeover were either related to Christmas and winter, or related to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, referencing the "Grinch Leak". The catchphrase was changed to "Please read the channel description, sponsored by Illumination™'s The Grinch™, in theaters now!"

Two years later, these rips, along with rips from Christmas 2019, were compiled into the album Dr. Pavel's How the Grinch Took Over SiIvaGunner.

So, you thought the Joker was the most exciting thing tonight, eh?

I guess that's why they call him that.

December 6 A reference to the announcement of Joker from Persona 5 as a DLC character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

It's time for me to make myself comfortable...

...because from here on out, I'm calling the shots!

I'm stealing the show!

And best of all... I'm LEAKING THE ROSTER!

Say hello to your new leader of SiIvaGunner... the Grinch!

The mention of "LEAKING THE ROSTER" is a reference to the "Grinch Leak".

I have a brand new leak for all of you beautiful SiIvaGunman fans: Deez Nuts will be taking over the channel in 2019!

Be sure to see Illumination's The Grinch, in theaters now!

I made a visit to the Gunner's warehouse yesterday, and found something he was waiting to reveal at MAGFest! I'll leak the full image in a few days, but for now let's hope you can take a hint.

In the meantime, don't forget to see Illumination's The Grinch, in theaters now!

hey guys, did you know

that trees

are made of wood

This was the only tweet not posted in-character as the Grinch during the takeover, instead implied to be written by Wood Man.

This comic by thefluffyslipper explains the hiatus in channel uploads starting December 19. In the last panel, The Grinch holds in one hand a "Leaks" list, with the entries "KFAD 2" (referring to the King for Another Day Tournament) and "1/5/19" (the date of the MAGFest 2019 SiIvaGunner panel and Q&A) legible, and in the other hand a "Rip Ideas" list, with the entries "Maroon Let's Go Adam" and "Maroon Let's Go Jesse", "Bonus Game Failure", and "Chill (Ver 2.)" legible.

Nearly 7 years after the takeover's conclusion, this comic was given a video upload as "Ending - The Grinch" on May 9, 2025.
