"Christmas in July" refers to a 2010 television commercial produced by American specialty retailer HH Gregg, promoting their Christmas in July sale. This commercial became a commonly used source in YTPMVs around late 2014 and eventually a meme on the SiIvaGunner channel.
History
The mascot of HH Gregg, named HH, was developed by Zimmerman Advertising and Hinge Digital and was first used around early 2009.[1]
The "Christmas in July" commercial is actually a re-purposed commercial for hhgregg's Red Tag Christmas sale from the year before.[2] It features HH standing outside an hhgregg retail store singing about the store's Christmas in July sale to the tune of "Deck the Halls". At the end, hh gets hit with a snowball thrown from off-screen before finishing his song.[3] This would go on to be hhgregg's most popular advertisement.
The earliest known YTPMV to incorporate "Christmas in July" was "rally H", a YTPMV set to "In-Game Music" from New Rally-X, uploaded by The Cool Videos on November 15, 2014.[4]
The man who voices HH, Wally Wingert, went on to voice Jon in The Garfield Show and Cubot in some Sonic the Hedgehog games.
Rips
"Christmas in July" is a meme on the channel. Naturally, it appears mostly in rips during the month of July and during the Christmas season. Due to the nature of the video, it is usually incorporated via pitch-shifting, occasionally with YTPMV visuals, though very rarely the commercial's slightly altered version of "Deck the Halls"' melody is incorporated via a melody change. The mascot, HH, appeared in the Christmas Comeback Crisis side story "I Wanna Thank Me".
This meme received a dedicated channel event on Christmas in July 2021, and the HhGregg's Quest for Coupons playlist is dedicated to rips featuring this meme.
