"Buddy Holly" is a song by Weezer. It is also a meme on the SiIvaGunner channel.
Summary
"Buddy Holly" is a song by the American band, Weezer. It was first released on the band's self-titled debut album (colloquially known as "The Blue Album") on May 10, 1994, and was later released as its second single on September 7, 1994. The song was also given a music video, in which the song is performed at Arnold's Drive-In, a location from the 1970s television show Happy Days. The song was highly succesful, largely thanks to its music video coming bundled with copies of Windows 95.[1]
Due to the song's popularity, many remixes and covers were uploaded to YouTube by the late 2010s. Leading off of this, in 2022, two "soundfont" covers of the track would be released on YouTube, one being a cover by Sadego! using Super Mario 64 instruments[2], and the other being a cover using Doom instruments by eg_9371.[3] Both covers went viral, leading to many other "soundfont" covers being created.
Another meme related to the song is parody edits of the Blue Album cover art, in which the band members are often replaced with other characters from various media. Instances of this meme would then themselves be utilized for the "You Just Got Weezered / Get Weezered" meme, originating from TikTok, which often acted as bait-and-switch videos leading to the iconic guitar lick directly before the song's final chorus. This meme is often labelled as the Gen Z version of Rickrolling, with cases of this type of trolling happening to famous YouTubers such as jschlatt.[4][5]
Rips
Before "Buddy Holly" itself was referenced in any rips, the album SiIvaGunner (Blue Album), made for the April Fools' Day 2019 event, was released. The album consisted entirely of blue balls rips, and its cover artwork parodies that of the Blue Album. 2 years later, the first rip to feature "Buddy Holly" would be "Lullaby (Extended Mix) - Yume Nikki" on June 26, 2021, in which the song appears at the 30:57 mark. The song would then go on to be referenced a handful of times throughout Season 6 and Season 7.
In Season 8, however, usage of "Buddy Holly" in rips increased exponentially, largely due to the April Fools' Day 2024 event, in which many rips involved the song. One community post during the event also contained an edit of the cover of SiIvaGunner (Blue Album), with Twonko replaced with The Joke-Explainer™ 7000.
A handful of rips featuring "Buddy Holly" solely reference the song's famous guitar lick, such as "Wishing upon the Milky Way", "Acapella Rockapella Soundtrack Medley - Super Meat Boy", and "Bean Bean Pork Bean (Extended Mix) - MOTHER 3".
